MOUNT VERNON — Shawyn Patterson-Howard was inaugurated as the new mayor on Saturday, the first woman elected to the position, and said the city she called the jewel of Westchester County is “about to shine and gleam again.”

Patterson-Howard, in remarks to a packed auditorium at Nellie A. Thornton High School, said that “in dark times, stars shine more brightly than we could ever have imagined.”

Her term in office begins after the city experienced a tumultuous 2019, including legal battles over who was the previous mayor.

But Patterson-Howard said Mount Vernon is “on the precipice of a new chapter” and spoke of working with the school district to increase educational opportunity and better student outcomes, to be wise about the city’s economic-development partners so that Mount Vernon benefits, and to ensure resources to fix crumbling infrastructure of sewer, roads and lights.

On Saturday, the new chapter featured a host of bold-face political names who spoke at the inauguration, among them U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, the Senate minority leader, who called it “a great day for Mount Vernon.”
